Japan – Expansion of social insurance for part-time employees

What’s new?

From 1 October 2024, companies with over 50 employees will be required to enrol part-time employees in social insurance. Previously, it was only mandatory for companies with over 100 employees.

Who is eligible?

Employers must enrol all part-time employees who work at least 75% of a full-time employee’s working hours. For part-time employees who work less than this, the following criteria must be met in order to enrol them:

they are not a student;
their prescribed working hours per week are at least 20 hours;
their monthly salary is at least JPY 88,000; and
they are expected to continue their employment for more than 2 months.

So, what should employers do now?

Employers required to enrol part-time employees in social insurance from 1 October 2024, should determine which of their employees must be enrolled and take the necessary steps to do so. What key changes have been made? Extended Statute of Limitation Under the UAE Labour Law, the limitation period was originally one year. The Decree now extends this period to two years, allowing employers and employees to file a labour claim within two years from the date the cause of action arises (e.g. the termination date).
